Rookie Earns Spot After Solid Showing at Traverse City
Des Moines, IA – Iowa Wild General Manager Jim Mill announced on Wednesday the team has signed forward Ryan Walters to a one-way AHL SPC (Standard Player Contract).
The 23-year old forward made an impact at this year’s 2014 NHL Prospects Tournament in Traverse City, MI. The Rosemount, MN native posted six points off three goals and three assists in four games, helping the Wild prospects post a 2-2-0-0 mark. The 6-foot-1, 190-pound forward turned pro last spring after completing a four-year career at the University of Nebraska-Omaha. From 2010-14, Walters skated in 152 games for UNO, scoring 50 goals and adding 84 assists for 134 points. As a junior, Walters was a Hobey Baker Award finalist (Top Collegiate Player), after he led the nation in scoring with 22 goals and 52 points in 39 games. In addition, he was named to the All-WCHA First Team and NCAA (West) Second All-American Team in 2012-13. He turned pro with the AHL’s Bridgeport Sound Tigers last spring. In 11 games with the Sound Tigers, Walters scored his first pro goal and added two assists for three points. Walters is no stranger to Iowa, having suited up for the USHL’s Des Moines Buccaneers from 2007-10. He scored 39 goals and totaled 108 points in 135 games.
