Iowa Hits the Road for Three Straight
DES MOINES, Iowa – The Iowa Wild (1-5-0-0, 2 points) defeated the Charlotte Checkers (2-5-0-0, 4 points) 4-1 in front of 6,429 fans at Wells Fargo Arena on Saturday night. Forward Jordan Schroeder scored twice in the first period and goalie Johan Gustafsson (1-3-0) made 34 saves for the team’s first win. Forwards Zack Phillips and Kurtis Gabriel also scored in the victory. Charlotte goalie John Muse (0-2-0) stopped 25 shots for the loss. Center Tyler Graovac added two assists for the Wild. Iowa begins a three-game road swing at Milwaukee on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
The Wild opened the first by scoring two goals less than a minute apart from each other. Forward Jordan Schroeder received a pass from forward Tyler Graovac to set up the one timer at the 5:00 mark, making it 1-0 Wild. Schroeder’s goal was his first of the night and second of the year. Forward Zack Mitchell also picked up an assist on the play. Only fifty-four seconds later, forward Zack Phillips found the net, scoring at the 5:54 mark of the period, giving Iowa a 2-0 lead. Defenseman Danny Syvret and rookie forward Michael Keranen fed Phillips the puck. Syvret registered his 300th career AHL point with the assist. Schroeder and Graovac again connected to score late in the period when Graovac delivered Schroeder the puck at 17:30 for his second goal of the night and third of the season for a 3-0 lead after one period.
After a scoreless second period, the Checkers were able to find the back of the net in the third period. Forward Greg Nemisz tipped a shot past Wild goalie Johan Gustafsson at the 4:27 mark. Defensemen Trevor Carrick and Danny Biega aided Nemisz on the goal, drawing Charlotte within two at 3-1. Iowa extended its lead back to two late in the period when Kurtis Gabriel scored an empty-net power-play goal at 19:53. Brett Sutter assisted Gabriel’s goal that made it 4-1 Wild.
Iowa embarks on a three-game road trip with stops in Milwaukee and Oklahoma City before returning home for a three-game home stand. The Wild returns home on Thursday, Nov. 6 to host Rockford at 10:30 a.m. Thursday’s game with the IceHogs is also School Field Trip Day, where the first 5,000 youths (12 and under) receive an Iowa Wild drawstring backpack, compliments of NASH FM. Iowa rounds out its home stand against Chicago with a two-game series at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 8 and Sunday, Nov. 9. Saturday night is Ladies Night, where the first 2,500 fans receive an Iowa Wild ice scraper sponsored by Greater Iowa Credit Union. All ladies (21 and over) may purchase glasses of wine for $1.00. The Wild will also host Special Olympics Night on Saturday. Sunday is Pucks N’ Paws day, where the first 2,500 fans receive pet tags, compliments of Anderson Animal Hospital. It is also a Subway Family Four Pack game, where fans may purchase four tickets, four sodas and four hot dogs, starting at $48.
The Iowa Wild 2014-15 season is presented by Mercy Medical Center, it runs from October through April. Fans may purchase seats to see any of the team’s 38 regular season home games at Wells Fargo Arena. Season tickets to see the Wild play at Wells Fargo Arena start at just $9 per game.
