Iowa Goalie John Curry Shines In Victory
DES MOINES, Iowa – The Iowa Wild (14-23-1-1, 30 points) defeated the Lake Erie Monsters (16-16-2-3, 37 points) 4-1 in front of 8,463 fans on Saturday night at Wells Fargo Arena. Iowa goalie John Curry (7-7-0) stopped 24 shots in the win, losing his first shutout of the season with one second remaining in regulation. Defensemen Danny Syvret, Stu Bickel and Brad Richard, as well as forward Michael Keranen, each scored for the Wild to snap a three-game losing streak. Lake Erie goalie Reto Berra (1-1-0) made 24 saves on 28 shots in the road loss. The Wild will host the Monsters on Sunday at 3 p.m.
The Wild opened up the scoring at the 15:02 mark of the first period with a goal from defenseman Danny Syvret for the 1-0 lead. Syvret fired a wrist shot that bounced off Lake Erie goalie Reto Berra’s right shoulder and into the net. Wild Captain Stephane Veilleux and forward Kurtis Gabriel set up Syvret’s third goal of the season.
Iowa extended its lead at 12:53 of the second period with a goal from forward Michael Keranen. Keranen’s sixth goal of the year was assisted by Veilleux for the 2-0 lead. The Wild continued to widen the gap after defenseman Brad Richard scored off a slap shot from the blueline at the 17:11 mark of the period. Richard’s first career AHL was aided by forwards Zack Mitchell and Tyler Graovac, giving Iowa a 3-0 lead.
In the third period, defenseman Stu Bickel gave the Wild a 4-0 lead with a goal at the 2:03 mark of the period. Forwards Marc Hagel and Brett Bulmer assisted Bickel’s second goal of the season. With one second left to play in the game, forward Kenny Ryan scored for the Monsters, breaking up goalie John Curry’s shutout for the 4-1 final. Ryan’s seventh goal of the season was assisted by forward Mitchell Heard and defenseman Bruno Gervais for the 4-1 final
On Sunday, Jan. 18, the Wild and Monsters meet again at 3 p.m. Also on Sunday, the Wild celebrates Kids WinterFest, featuring Xbox Dance Revolution, face painting, balloon artists and a sign station, presented by Fast Signs. The first 1,500 youths to the game (12 and under) receives an Iowa Wild green youth jersey, presented by KDSM FOX 17 & Scheels. The team is also hosting its first ever Baby Derby, presented by Me & Mommy To Be. Fans will be able to watch the baby’s crawl to see which is the fastest in central Iowa. Fans will also be able to purchase the Subway Combo Pack, presented by Subway and More 104. The Subway Combo Pack includes one ticket, one hot dog, one soda and a Subway coupon, starting at just $12. The Wild also hosts a public skate after the game, presented Grip Tite. All fans are reminded to bring their skates.
Iowa finishes its three-game home stand on Thursday, Jan. 22 against Rockford at 7 p.m. It’s also a Throwback Thursday game, where fans may purchase hot dogs for a dollar, sponsored by 95 KGGO. Also on Thursday, fans may send pictures to the Wild (via social media) of themselves in hockey jerseys or while skating, for a chance to win prizes. Additionally, those who bring a Subway receipt may purchase a ticket for $5 at the box office.
The Iowa Wild 2014-15 season is presented by Mercy Medical Center, it runs from October through April. Fans may purchase seats to see any of the team’s 38 regular season home games at Wells Fargo Arena. Season tickets to see the Wild play at Wells Fargo Arena start at just $9 per game.
