Iowa Concludes Home Stand Friday
DES MOINES, IA – The Iowa Wild (22-45-2-2, 48 points) were defeated by the Rockford IceHogs (43-21-5-2, 93 points) 5-3 in front of 3,975 fans on Thursday at Wells Fargo Arena. Despite two goals scored from Wild Captain Stephane Veilleux, Rockford pushed past Iowa with five different goal scorers, including the game-winning goal by Dennis Rasmussen. Hogs goalie Michael Leighton (20-12-4) made 35 saves on 38 shots in the victory. Rookie forward Kurtis Gabriel also recorded a multi-point game for Iowa with two assists. Forward Ruslan Fedotenko also scored for Iowa in the loss. Iowa goalie Johan Gustafsson (8-21-1) stopped 30 of 35 shots in defeat. Iowa hosts Oklahoma City at 7 p.m. on Friday.
Rockford opened up the scoring 4:56 into the first period when forward Tanner Kero fired a snapshot past Iowa goalie Johan Gustafsson. Kero’s first goal this season was unassisted for the 1-0 lead. Iowa tied the game 1-1 when forward Ruslan Fedotenko scored at the 12:10 mark. Fedotenko’s third goal this year was aided by rookie forwards Olivier Archambault and Grayson Downing. Rockford retook the lead when forward Mark McNeill launched a backhander into the net at 15:48 of the period. Defensemen Keith Seabrook and Viktor Svedberg set up the play for McNeill’s 21st goal this season, giving the IceHogs a 2-1 lead.
Rockford extended its lead 47 seconds into the second period when forward Alex Broadhurst scored. Broadhurst rifled the puck upstairs on a breakaway, making it 3-1 IceHogs. Defenseman Kyle Cumiskey assisted Broadhurst on his fifth goal this season. Iowa drew within one when Captain Stephane Veilleux muscled the puck past Rockford goalie Michael Leighton at the 3:54 mark. Veilleux’s fourth goal this season was aided by rookie forwards Brady Brassart and Kurtis Gabriel, making it 3-2 IceHogs. Iowa tied the game 3-3 when Veilleux scored his second goal of the night at the 8:27 mark. Gabriel and defenseman Steve McCarthy aided Veilleux on his fifth goal of the season. Rockford regained the lead at 9:50 of the period when forward Dennis Rasmussen scored a power-play goal. Rookie defenseman Stephen Johns and rookie forward Ryan Hartman aided Rasmussen on his 13th goal this year, giving the IceHogs a 4-3 lead. The IceHogs widened the gap at 18:26 of the period when forward Spencer Abbott scored. Abbott’s 17th goal this season was unassisted for the 5-3 final.
Iowa concludes its four-game home stand with Oklahoma City at 7 p.m. on Friday, Apr. 10. It’s Fan Appreciation night featuring a team poster giveaway to the first 5,000 fans, sponsored by Mercy Medical Center, Prairie Life Fitness, Edwards Printing and MB2 Raceway. The team is also holding a Chuck-a-Duck at Friday’s game, where fans may purchase rubber ducks to throw on the ice during intermission. All proceeds from the event go to benefit the Youth Emergency Shelter and Services. It’s also STEM Night, where a $1,000 scholarship will be awarded to the student who designs the best helmet to reduce concussions for hockey players, presented by Des Moines University. It’s also a $2 Beer Night, presented by 100.3 The Bus. Fans may purchase 10-ounce domestic beers for only $2 through the first period of play.
After a road game in Chicago on Sunday, Apr. 11, the Wild welcomes the Toronto Marlies for the final regular season home game at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Apr. 14 – celebrating Fan Appreciation Night. During the game, Iowa is giving away a multitude of coupons from corporate sponsors. It’s also a Taco Tuesday – presented by Taco Johns, where each fan that comes to the game receives a coupon for a free crispy beef taco from Taco Johns. It’s also two-for-one Tuesday, where fans may purchase one attack end ticket and receive a second ticket free, sponsored by Hits 99.9 FM. Also, those who bring in a Subway receipt may purchase a $5 game ticket at the box office.
