IOWA WILD ANNOUNCES “BREAK-A-STICK, PLANT-A-TREE" EVENT
Mar 24, 2025DES MOINES, Iowa – The Iowa Wild, in collaboration with WM and with the participation of the City of Des Moines’ Forestry Division, today announced that the team will host a “Break-A-Stick, Plant-A-Tree" event on Friday, April 11.
During the “Break-A-Stick, Plant-A-Tree" event, the Iowa Wild will give out a tree for every stick broken during the 2024-25 season. Fans can sign up now on a first-come, first-serve basis to receive one of 240 Norway Spruce seedlings.
"At the Iowa Wild, we’re deeply committed to supporting Des Moines and surrounding communities,” said Allie Brown Korinek, Vice President of Business Operations for the Iowa Wild. “As we approach Earth Month and Earth Day, we’re excited to offer our passionate fans the chance to plant trees that will thrive in their neighborhoods for years to come and help make a lasting, positive impact on our environment."
“At WM, our commitment to the environment drives us to look for collaborations with initiatives that enhance both sustainability and community well-being,” said Brad Pollock, Area Vice President for WM’s Heartland Area. “Planting trees is a powerful way to achieve this, offering significant environmental benefits like carbon sequestration and improved stormwater management, while also fostering a stronger connection to nature within the Des Moines community. We're proud to collaborate with the Iowa Wild in this 'Break-A-Stick, Plant-A-Tree' event, contributing to a healthier and more resilient future.”
The Iowa Wild and WM will host the event in the Wells Fargo Arena parking lot on Friday, April 11 from 3-5 p.m. Arborists from the Des Moines Public Works Department’s Forestry Division will be on hand to distribute trees and give instructions on proper care. Fans picking up trees will also be able to enjoy food and beverages and participate in family-friendly activities provided by JP Party Rentals, Niece Trucking, Iowa Speedway, and other local businesses.
“Des Moines Forestry is excited to send four arborists to the Iowa Wild ‘Break-A-Stick, Plant-A-Tree' event to provide simple care tips for successful tree growth,” said Dan Just, Urban Forestry Project Manager with the Des Moines Public Works Department’s Forestry Division. “They’ll also discuss the benefits of planting smaller, bare-root tree seedlings, which tend to outpace larger trees within a few years of growth.”
“The importance of filling in the gaps in our tree canopy cannot be understated, and Des Moines Forestry is thrilled to hear that more trees will soon be joining our urban forest.”
