Wild Center Zack Phillips Propels Iowa To 2-1 OT Win
Moline, IL – The Iowa Wild edged the Milwaukee Admirals 2-1 in overtime on Friday afternoon at the Iwireless Center in a preseason scrimmage. Iowa center Zack Phillips blasted a one-timer over the right shoulder of Milwaukee Admirals goaltender Marek Mazanec (20 saves) with 59.8 seconds left in overtime to lift the Iowa Wild to victory. For the second preseason game, Iowa trailed heading into the third period and managed to rally for an overtime win. Goalie Darcy Kuemper surrendered a goal to the Admirals early, then shutout Milwaukee the rest of the way to finish with 20 saves and the win. Rookie Taylor Matson also scored in the Wild victory. The Iowa Wild will host the Oklahoma City Barons at 7:05 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 12.
The Admirals opened the scoring at 1:45 of the opening frame, as defenseman Scott Ford took a pass at the right face-off dot and snapped a shot past the glove of Darcy Kuemper (20 saves). Mikka Salomaki and center Austin Watson collected the assists. Ford’s even-strength marker was the only tally for either side in the first period. Shots favored the Admirals, 7-5.
At the 11:24 mark of the second period, the Admirals thought they had taken a 2-0 lead, but their goal was waved off by the referee due to an illegal hand pass. The two teams headed into the dressing room after 40 minutes with the Admirals in front, 1-0. At the second intermission the shots were 14-13 Milwaukee.
The Wild pulled even late in regulation, when Taylor Matson scored off a scramble in front of Mazanec. Center Erik Haula and defenseman Brian Connelly picked up the helpers on the even-strength goal at 15:46. The game would head to overtime with the shots favoring the Wild, 26-21.
The Wild were granted a power play in overtime after Admirals winger Miikka Salomaki went to the box for boarding. With the power play, and overtime winding down, the Wild maintained the puck in the offensive zone for several moments before defenseman Jonathon Blum fed the puck to Phillips at the left circle. Connelly got the second assist on the game-winning goal.
The Wild finished the game with a 31-21 advantage in shots. The Wild ended the night 1-for-4 on the power play, while the Admirals were 0-for-1. Kuemper earned the win after stopping 20 of the 21 shots he faced. Magnus Hellberg (nine saves) started in net for the Admirals, and was replaced by Mazanec in the middle of the second period.
