WILD SETS AHL MARK FOR LARGEST OPENING NIGHT CROWD IN IOWA HISTORY
Des Moines, IA – The Iowa Wild (1-0-0-0, 2 points) defeated the Oklahoma City Barons (0-3-0-0, 0 points) 1-0 in front of 10,213 fans on Saturday night at Wells Fargo Arena. Iowa goalie Johan Gustafsson (0-0) made 29 saves in his AHL debut, leading the Wild to a victory in the first game in team history. Left wing Bret Bulmer scored the game's lone goal, breaking a scoreless tie at 7:06 of the second period. Oklahoma City goalie Richard Bachman (0-3) stopped 26 in the loss. The Wild and Barons will meet again on Sunday at 4:05 p.m. at Wells Fargo Arena.
After a scoreless first period of play, Iowa opened the scoring at 7:06 of the second period. Chad Rau broke up a Barons pass at center ice and sprung Jason Zucker back the other direction. Zucker led a two-on-one rush into the Oklahoma City zone. The Wild winger zipped a cross-ice pass for Brett Bulmer, who buried a one-timer into the back of the Barons' net for the 1-0 lead.
The crowd of 10,213 is the largest Opening Night crowd in the history of Iowa hockey. The crowd is also the second largest crowd to see a hockey game at Wells Fargo Arena.
Iowa will host Oklahoma City at 4:05 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 13. The game marks KidsFest, where the first 5,000 fans to the game receive a pair of ThunderSticks and magnetic schedules. Over the weekend set, the Wild partner with the Iowa Chapter of ALS. As part of the partnership, the Iowa Wild will wear a specialty Inaugural season patch on the team's jerseys. Fans will be able to bid on the game-worn jerseys via a silent auction on the concourse over Opening Weekend. The auction will conclude at the end of the second intermission of the game on Sunday, Oct. 13. All proceeds from the auction will benefit the Iowa Chapter of the ALS Association.
